Old Love faces new challenges in heartwarming, humorous play at Clackamas Rep

Old Love New Love involves Alzheimer’s – and much, much more. It’s a story about love and the kind of dedication that leads you to put the one you love first.

A humorous, thought-provoking play about what we can’t remember and what we can forgive, Old Love New Love explores what happens when old love faces new challenges.

The play, written by Laura Brienza, opens as Gloria has finally admitted that she can no longer care for her husband, Colin, at home. Shortly after she places Colin in a facility, he falls in love with Lane, another patient. Gloria quickly pulls Colin out of the facility and brings him home, but as this new attachment seems lasting, can she make concessions and accept what is best for both Colin and Lane? Can she agree to the wishes of
Lane’s husband and allow the two to visit?

Karlyn Love is directing Clackamas Rep’s production. “Old Love New Love is not a play about Alzheimer’s Disease,” she says. “It is a play about love, all kinds of love. The love a parent has for a child, the love a friend can have for a friend, the love a spouse has for their spouse and how that love is tested in the face of a disease like Alzheimer’s. This play is about the kind of love that makes you put the one you love first. It is about how important love is to us as humans and how much we need to love and be loved to thrive.”
